ADDITIVES

Along the surfboard manufacturing process, you will certainly need some chemical additives :

  • paraffined styrene (10%) : essential material for the hot-coating step of the process. Once you are done with the lamination of the board (deck and bottom), you will have to apply another layer of resin, into which paraffined styrene will be added. To spread this layer onto the board, you need to use a spalter, in order to give the smoothest finish as possible, and therefore make the sanding process easier. Prepare you pre-mix with resin (>500ml), paraffined styrene (4% in volume), and some catalyst (2% in volume). Pour the pre-mix on the bottom of the board, then spread it to make it the thinest layer possible. Let it dry, then repeat this operatoin on the deck of the board. 3% to 4% of monomer styrene can be added in order to lower the viscosity of the solution, and therefore ease the work.

  • catalyst : added to your polyester resin, it helps the polymerization step. There are 2 types of catalyst to choose from: PMEK liquid catalyst (traditional), or a UV catalyst which gives you more time to work, as the polymerization would only start once the board is exposed to sun light.

  • microballoon : used to perform ding repairs, it is a product that will fill the holes/damages in the foam blank (together with resin + catalyst), prior to add some fiberglass.

  • silica : fine and light powder also used for ding repairs. For larger damages/holes (like a board broken in halves), you can mix the silica with some microballoon. It will give you a ''repairing paste''.

  • the acetone will clean all the tools used in contact with resin(s). Avoid any direct contact with your skin. Therefore, to clean your hands, we strongly recommend the use of cleaning wipes or biological soap, non-toxic.

  • some diluent, to dilute cellulosic based paints.
