The lamination of the board is the most critical step of the manufacturing proces of a surfboard, as the clock starts ticking from the moment the polyester resin is mixed with the catalyst (or hardener for Expoxy based board).

To ease your and guarantee the quality of your work, please make sure that you stick to the following basic rules:
  • You should always use the resin in temperatures ranging from 18°C à 25°C, which will need to be fairly stable all along the process of manufacturing/shaping and drying.
  • Styrens and catalysts answer to the same rule hereabove: store in temperature conditions above > 18° and < 25°C
  • Prepare and have at hand all the necessary tools.
  • Make some room around the board.

    Preliminary work and installation  :
  • Install the blank, dust it off, upside down on the stand (bottom of the board looking up)
  • Unwind the reel of fabric in the length of the board, leaving a 5 to 10cm additional margin on each sides and on both ends
  • Cut the fabric, parallel to the edges of the board, leaving approx. 5cm all arounf the board (for the laps); in order to optimize the quality of your work, only use perfectly sharp scisscors, to allow clean cuts
  • You can use the waste to cut oval-shaped pieces of fabric, which you will use for the fins.; This will reinforce board where it is most stressed.
  • Add then all the required logos/designs that have been printed on printable silk sheets
  • Pour the necessary quantity of resin into a  measuring jar  (from 700ml to more, depending on the size of the board) ;
  • Add the catalyst (1 to 1,5% of the resin volume used) to activate the polymerization process; Make your life easier: use a dispenser !
  • Use wooden tools to blend the materials

    You are now ready to proceed !
  • Using a  small brush , brush on the critical points of the board: reinforcements for the fins & logos;
  • Pour onto the board about 2/3 of the resin prepared; spread it with fast movements, in round motions, from the inside to the outside, using a squeegee  ;
  • Pour the remaining 1/3 of resin onto the rails of the board, making sure that all teh fabric is covered by the resin. The additional fabric on the sides, will have to be folded down in order to stick onto the deck side of the board (a small sized and more rigid plastic squeegee can be of a great help for this part of the process) ;
  • Let it dry for 2 to 3 hours, then turn the board around to do the repeat the exact same step on the other side. Before you start, sand out/polish the cuts of the fabric layer you just put onto the board. You need to get a perfectly smooth deck before your start this step again.

  • Once your board is completely wrapped up with the fabric, you will have to get through the  hot- coating process , a compulsory step before the sanding of the board.
